              <text>This is earliest class ring in the library’s collection, and it belonged to John Bratt. Bratt was born in New York and entered the Academy on July 1, 1833. He was graduated and promoted in the army to Second Lieutenant, 3rd Artillery on July 1, 1837. Bratt served in the garrison at Ft. Monroe, VA from July - August 1837, and resigned his commission on August 31, 1837. From 1838-1850, he served as an assistant engineer of the United States working on the construction of Ft. Montgomery, Rouse's Point, NY, and as the United States Agent in charge of improvements of the Hudson River, NY. He also served as the Assistant Engineer of Albany and the West Stockbridge Railroad, NY. Bratt returned to West Point serving as Purveyor in the Subsistence Department of Cadets from December 1, 1850 to February 15, 1882, then farmed land near Garrison, NY. He died at age 67 on May 21, 1890 in Brooklyn, NY.&#13;
