“When the news of the firing on Fort Sumter was received at West Point, the effect was instantaneous. Every Northern cadet now showed his colors. One could have heard us singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Cold Spring. It was the first time I ever saw the Southern contingent cowed. All of their Northern allies had deserted them, and they were stunned.”
